Ao Ashi

Producing a sports series that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with genre greats is no small feat, yet the twenty-four-episode run of this 2022 adaptation manages exactly that. Brought to life by studio Production I.G—already famous for their basketball legacy—this project follows Ashito Aoi, a hot-headed teenager from a rural town whose raw talent as a striker catches the eye of a Tokyo youth academy coach. Rather than relying on flashy super-moves, the narrative digs deep into the tactical realities of association football, specifically the demanding shift from offense to defense. The impressive 8.2 score reflects how effectively it balances intense ganbatte energy with grounded coming-of-age struggles and the harsh realities of bullying and team dynamics. Watching Ashito navigate the pressures of an elite ensemble cast makes for a highly rewarding viewing experience that sets a high bar for modern sports dramas.
