Aharen-san wa Hakarenai

Boy-meets-girl romantic comedies often rely on charming misunderstandings, but this 2022 adaptation takes that concept to hilarious extremes. Produced by Felix Film, the 12-episode series centers on Raido, a well-meaning but intimidating student, and his new desk neighbor, Reina Aharen. The core joke revolves around Aharen's complete inability to gauge personal space—she either stands uncomfortably close or shouts from across the room. Powered by a 7.4 rating, the anime blends cute-girl charm with deadpan reactions and a surprising amount of physical comedy. The show leans heavily into episodic gags involving family life, animals, and even some unexpected crossdressing. While the CGI elements take some getting used to, the genuine sweetness of the two leads' awkward attempts to understand each other keeps the experience thoroughly endearing. It is a wonderfully weird look at teenage communication that proves connection comes in many different shapes and sizes.
