Fruits Basket

A defining shojo classic of the early 2000s, this Studio Deen production captures the bittersweet growing pains of high schooler Tohru Honda. After a family tragedy leaves her living in a tent, she discovers the closely guarded secret of the Sohma family. Several members are cursed to transform into animals of the Chinese zodiac whenever they are embraced by the opposite sex. What begins as a quirky cohabitation comedy slowly unfolds into a heartfelt drama about trauma, bullying, and acceptance. Across twenty-six episodes, the 2001 anime adaptation leans heavily into the comedic timing and angst of its source material. Holding a 7.7 score, the series remains a time capsule of early-century animation, complete with dreamy character designs and melancholic undertones. While it only covers a portion of the overarching narrative, its focus on emotional healing and found family establishes a comforting yet melancholic atmosphere that continues to resonate with fans of character-driven romance.
