Kotonoha no Niwa

Atmospheric rainfall and stunning environments define this 2013 film from CoMix Wave Films. Set entirely within the lush confines of a Tokyo garden, the movie explores an age-gap relationship between a frustrated fifteen-year-old student named Takao, who dreams of becoming a shoemaker, and a mysterious older woman named Yukari. Seeking refuge from their respective struggles—ranging from academic pressures to workplace bullying—the two characters meet repeatedly on rainy mornings. Their quiet, character-driven interactions form the core of the narrative, which carries an undertone of angst and emotional longing. The movie's CGI elements beautifully render the park's flora, giving the short runtime a cinematic sense of scale. With an 8.0 score and an award-winning pedigree, the film captures the bittersweet nature of human connection and the subtle ways people inspire one another to take the next step forward in their lives.
