Violet Evergarden

Kyoto Animation brings an extraordinary level of visual detail to this 2018 character-driven drama. Set in the aftermath of a devastating war, the story centers on a former child soldier who was built to be a living weapon. Having lost her commanding officer and both of her arms, she takes a job as an Auto Memory Doll—a ghostwriter who transcribes letters for others. Her objective is to understand the last words her major spoke to her: "I love you." Through her interactions with clients across various walks of life, she slowly begins to comprehend human emotion. Scoring an impressive 8.6, this thirteen-episode series uses its post-war setting to explore grief, connection, and recovery. Each episode offers a poignant look at the power of communication, backed by breathtaking backgrounds and meticulously crafted character acting. It is a moving coming-of-age tale that relies on quiet reflection rather than the battlefield action of her past.
