Kingdom

Ambition and warfare drive this sprawling adaptation of ancient China's tumultuous history. Produced by Studio Pierrot alongside Ikif+, the 2012 series introduces a harsh environment where orphaned slave boys dream of becoming Great Generals. The narrative quickly expands from a personal tale of two boys—one a slave named Shin, the other a young king aiming to reclaim his throne—into a massive military campaign. Across thirty-eight episodes, the show explores aristocratic betrayals and tactical battlefield maneuvering. Viewers should be aware that the production relies heavily on 3D CG animation for its armies and combat sequences, which was a point of contention during its initial release. However, the core story remains a fiercely engaging tale of upward mobility and battlefield strategy. For fans of historical adventures and large-scale sword-fighting action, the show provides a dense, political narrative that sets the foundation for an extensive epic.
