Planetes

Sunrise took a bold swing in 2003 by adapting Makoto Yukimura’s manga into a 26-episode space drama. Instead of focusing on grand intergalactic wars, Planetes zeroes in on the unglamorous reality of garbage collection in orbit. The story follows Ai Tanabe and Hachirota Hoshino, two employees of a debris-hauling section whose job is to keep space lanes safe from loose screws and abandoned satellites. What makes this 8.2-rated series special is how it balances its hard sci-fi setting with deeply human concerns. The adult cast deals with realistic career anxieties, romantic entanglements, and the sheer psychological toll of space travel. Through a mix of slice-of-life comedy and high-stakes adventure, the anime explores the existential angst of those who dream of reaching Jupiter but are currently stuck cleaning up Earth's mess. The boy-meets-girl dynamic evolves naturally against a backdrop of corporate politics and the vast emptiness of the cosmos.
