Sennen Joyuu

Madhouse brought this 2002 award-winning film to life through a brilliant mix of reality and memory. Sennen Joyuu follows a documentary filmmaker interviewing a retired actress whose career spans decades of Japanese cinema. As she recounts her past, the boundaries between her real-life memories and the fictional worlds of her movies blur into a breathtaking, anachronistic adventure. The film fluidly shifts through different eras, from feudal Japan to wartime drama, all while maintaining a deeply emotional core centered on an adult cast. The protagonist's lifelong search for a mysterious man she met in her youth drives the relentless forward momentum of the narrative. Viewers are treated to a masterclass in visual storytelling and acting, where the camera moves through scene transitions that film students still study today. With a single feature-length runtime, it delivers a profound, melancholic look at passion and the fleeting nature of life.
