Shounen Onmyouji

Set during the 10th century Heian period, this 26-episode Studio Deen production follows a young onmyouji-in-training who must master spiritual arts to protect the imperial court from demonic threats. Based on a light novel series, the show blends action and adventure with coming-of-age drama, sprinkling comedy throughout to keep the tone from becoming oppressive. Our protagonist inherits a weighty legacy — the name and expectations tied to his grandfather, the legendary Abe no Seimei — and much of the narrative tension comes from him proving himself worthy while still finding his own path. The supernatural elements draw from Japanese folklore, with various demons and spirits populating the historical backdrop. At a 7.7 score, it lands as a solid mid-2000s adaptation that rewards viewers looking for something character-focused within a period action framework. The 26-episode count gives the story room to breathe, letting side characters and world details develop naturally across its two cours.
