Barakamon

A young calligrapher's ego takes a bruising when he punches a critic and is sent to a rural island to cool off and reflect. Produced by Kinema Citrus in Summer 2014, this 12-episode slice-of-life series excels by contrasting urban frustration with rural simplicity. Earning an impressive 8.2 score, the narrative thrives on character-driven comedy and childcare, largely thanks to the local village children who constantly barge into the protagonist's life. The coastal setting profoundly shifts his artistic perspective as he struggles to find his own unique style of drawing and writing. Through daily interactions with the eccentric locals, he is forced to grow up and face his flaws. The series effortlessly blends laugh-out-loud physical comedy with genuinely touching moments of self-discovery. It stands as a highly engaging, heartwarming watch about finding inspiration in unexpected places and learning to appreciate the simple joys of daily life.
