About Hachimitsu to Clover
Five students at a Tokyo art college share cramped apartments, part-time jobs, and the nagging feeling that adulthood is closing in faster than expected. Yuta Takemoto, a second-year architecture student, watches his senior Shinobu Morita — a prodigy who can't seem to graduate — drift through life on his own strange frequency. Then Hagumi Hanamoto arrives, a painfully shy first-year painter whose talent and presence quietly upend the group's emotional equilibrium. Produced by J.C. Staff in 2005 across 24 episodes, this adaptation of Chica Umino's manga earned a 7.8 average score for good reason. The series sits squarely in the josei tradition: it cares less about dramatic plot turns than about the texture of unrequited feelings, creative insecurity, and the slow ache of figuring out who you want to become. Alcohol flows freely, age gaps complicate attractions, and nothing resolves neatly. Multiple live-action adaptations — a Japanese film, a TV drama, and other media — followed, but the anime remains the definitive telling of a story that treats young adult confusion with unusual patience and warmth.
Plan Your Watch
Is This Anime for You?
Best For
- You appreciate stories about college-age characters navigating uncertain futures rather than high school melodrama
- You enjoy slow-burn, character-driven romance where feelings go unspoken for long stretches
- Bittersweet coming-of-age tales with artistic settings appeal to you
Think Twice If
- You need fast pacing or action to stay engaged
- The love-triangle-heavy angst and unrequited feelings sound frustrating rather than compelling
- Slice-of-life stories without a clear plot progression aren't your preference
