Ya She

An antique shop staffed by celestial beings sits at the quiet center of this twelve-episode Chinese animated fantasy from Colored Pencil Animation Japan. Adapted from a web novel, Ya She uses its shop premise as a framing device for encounters between the mortal and divine—each episode introducing new objects, spirits, and moral questions that explore the space where human lives brush against the godly. The adult cast keeps the emotional register grounded and mature, allowing each installment room to breathe rather than rushing toward spectacle. Chinese mythology provides the foundation, with gods and supernatural phenomena treated as part of everyday commerce rather than grand revelations. A heterosexual romance thread runs through the episodic structure, giving the series a connective emotional spine beyond its anthology format. Scoring a 7.6 in its Fall 2024 run, the show rewards patient viewing with atmosphere, folklore, and character dynamics that prioritize mood and reflection over action set-pieces.
