The Great Passage

Few animated series capture the quiet dignity of everyday professional life as beautifully as this 2016 workplace drama from studio Zexcs. Spanning exactly 11 episodes, the story focuses on the seemingly mundane task of compiling a new dictionary, transforming the editing and publishing process into a deeply moving exploration of human connection. Mitsuya Majime is a linguist with a severe lack of social skills, yet his passion for words leads him to join a team dedicated to creating a comprehensive reference book called The Great Passage. Earning a highly respectable score of 7.7, the show masterfully blends its iyashikei healing qualities with genuine character drama. The meticulous nature of the characters' work serves as a reflection of their personal growth and shifting relationships over the years. It is an introspective, atmospheric character study that celebrates the profound ways language shapes our lives, making the act of flipping through pages feel like a grand adventure.
